What is Disaster?

We all know that disasters can occur at any time. So, that means we will never know when the disaster will happen. Disasters result in the loss of human life, properties, and more that affect the community. There are also different types of disasters, naturals, and man-made disasters. Examples are tsunamis, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, drought, landslides, oil spills, floods, even a simple hurricane. Disaster can cause extreme damage or even death if we’re not aware of our surroundings. Be ready and be prepared.

Natural Disasters

Earthquake

An earthquake is the shaking of the ground caused by a seismic wave. It's something that happens when two blocks of the earth suddenly slide past one another. Geographical faults, volcanic eruptions, and even human activity can be the cause of this. Experts use a seismograph to record and read earthquake movement and intensity.

Typhoon

A typhoon is a tropical cyclone or an intensive circular storm that starts over warm tropical oceans and has low atmospheric pressure, high wind, and heavy rain. These are some of the factors that form a typhoon. The Philippines is prone to typhoons because of its geographical location. Approximately 20 typhoons enter the Philippines every year and can be classified depending on their strength and air breeze.

Drought

Drought begins when the weather is high and hot, lesser rain, and the soil or field is dryer than usual. Drought brings water shortage, dying of harvest, agriculture problem, and high risk of wildfire.

Volcanic Eruptions

Volcanic eruptions start when magma started to rise when the mantle melts. The volcano erupted when the volcano can no longer handle the pressure. The Philippines is known for frequent earthquake, and volcanic eruptions because there are plenty of active volcanoes, and the country belong to the Pacific Ring of Fire.

 Tsunami and Storm Surge

Tsunami and storm surges can happen during typhoons or earthquakes. Tsunamis is seismic wave causes of volcanic eruption, earthquake or sudden vibration of earth's surface. Storm surge is the rise of sea level during storms and strong winds. The inflation water can move toward the shore that can cause distractions.

Man-made Disasters

Oil spills and toxic mine tailing

These are spills of a toxic substance or chemical on a body of water. Human activity is one of the causes of this that can result in bleaching of corals and is dangerous to fish and other sea creatures. Mine tailing is mine waste.

Floods

Floods are the result of a strong typhoon. It can happen because of human activity that damages the environment. Flood destroyed properties and affects people's life. A flood can last for days. The flood also causes fever and other diseases like leptospirosis and hepatitis A

Landslide

Landslide is the movement of land surface and rock.  It is caused by human activity like mining, cutting of trees, and throwing garbage everywhere. As humans continue to ignore the condition of the environment, there is a chance that landslides can happen frequently. Cutting of trees and storm make the soil softer that lead to a landslide.
